BuyVet's is owned and led by Kurt Larsen, EdD. Dr. Larsen served in the U.S. Navy from November 1976 through December 1979, at which time he was medically retired due to a spinal-cord injury suffered while on active duty. Larsen, who dreamed of becoming a dentist, reached the rank of DT3 in the short two years he served on active duty. As a Dental Technician, he enrolled in Southern Illinois University at Carbondale to study heath care administration and gained an affinity for all things medical and dental; thus a major business focus for BuyVet Picture: Larsen receives recognition as Sailor of the Quarter from Commanding Officer Naval Regional Dental Center San Francisco, CA.

Following nearly a year and a half in the Long Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center for extensive rehabilitation, Larsen was discharged and soon resumed his quest for a post-graduate degree. Having served as a museum docent at California State University, Long Beach following his injury, Larsen led many groups of school-age children and discovered a love for educating.  Earning a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies from California State University, Fullerton, Larsen graduating with honors and earned the respect of his professors by being recognized as the Outstanding Elementary Education Candidate of the Class of 1987. In 1989 Larsen earned a Professional Clear Credential and taught school in a variety of classrooms and led district efforts to effectively integrate technology into the curriculum. In 1994 he conceived, proposed, and founded HomeTech Charter School, an online public school in rural Northern California. Larsen moved to the Butte County Office of Education in 1995, leading the county’s professional development programs for instructional technology.

In 2001, following the completion of coursework for a Doctorial degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne, he joined WestEd, a non-profit research, development, and service organization. There he served as Principal Investigator/Director of the Regional Technology in Education Consortium (RTEC), where he strategically implemented the goals and objectives of the proposed project. At WestEd, Larsen worked closely with state education agencies in the region and across the country, consulted with advisors, partnered with internal projects and programs, and developed valued relationships with external organizations and the U.S. Department of Education.  Larsen earned an EdD from University of La Verne in Organization Leadership. He holds a BA in liberal studies from California State University, Fullerton, and a multiple-subjects teaching credential from California State University, Chico. Larsen believes in harnessing the power of technology to conduct business at a distance; to plan project initiatives with partners; and to facilitate processes and activities with clients. This said, he also enjoys Alpine Skiing and has participated numerous Veteran Winter Ski Clinics. He recognizes the importance of face-to-face connections; developing meaningful relationships with partners, clients, and collaborators; the simplicity of a phone-call just to say, “hello”; and the value of remembering a birthday, saying “thank you,” or expressing a note of praise for a job well done.
